KOMOTINI

Komotini is the capital of the prefecture of Rhodope and Thrace and the seat of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. It is a modern economic and administrative center of the wider region and combines a variety of European and oriental elements in the architecture of its buildings and in the traditional cultures that have coexisted for centuries in the same city.
A walk in Komotini brings us to the old market with its narrow streets and low houses with tiled roofs, to Irini Square, to the most authentic and unassuming statue of East and West. Here everyone gathers, locals and visitors, browsing the antique shops, jewelry stores, tin shops, shops selling pastourma, kavourmades, soutzouk, Turkish delight, tahini, and traditional stragalatzi shops with their built-in ovens that make the most delicious stragali in the country, while the aroma of freshly roasted Greek coffee from the coffee roasters in the area is pervasive.
TOURISTIC
GROVE
NYMPHAIAS

Just a few kilometers outside the city of Komotini, one can take a walk in the suburban forest of Nymfaia and drink their coffee at the Tourist kiosk located there, enjoying the view of the city and the plain from above. A little higher than the tourist kiosk is the Nymfaia fortress, where the area is open to the public and one can take a guided tour of the historical, war museum and the battlefield that was fought during the Second World War. For those who dare to go hiking or mountain biking, the European mountain trail E6, which starts in Sweden and crosses the lush slopes of the Rhodope Mountains with lime, elm, hazelnut, walnut and cedar trees, is rewarding, with the alternation of images and altitude.
The southern side of the prefecture is bathed in beautiful beaches, organized or not, and small picturesque coves in the crevices of steep reddish rocks. The cosmopolitan resort of Fanari with its vast, sandy, crystal-clear beach, or even the beaches of Arogi and Mesis, Profitis Ilias, Alkyona, Platanitis or the peninsula of Molyvoti, is another, charming side of Rhodope, where one can enjoy swimming and taste fresh fish in one of the fish taverns in the area.

COASTAL
ZONE
MARONIA

The ancient theater of Maroneia is located south of the homonymous village, in the location “Kampana” of the Rodopi prefecture. It is located within the fortifications of ancient Maroneia and has three construction phases. The theater was built in the early Hellenistic period. Its capacity reached 1200 – 1300 spectators.
In the coastal zone of the prefecture is also Maronia, known for its centuries-old history and its stately appearance. The wine presses of the Homeric era, the ancient theater and the sanctuary of Dionysus, the mosaic floor of a house of the 3rd century BC, the wall and the monumental propylon of the Roman era, the tower of the Byzantine fortification are examples of the uninterrupted presence of a high level of civilization in the area.
